When the Marks Are Low and the Feelings Are Heavy

Let’s talk about something people don’t say out loud very often.

Everyone says, “Marks don’t matter.”
Everyone says, “It’s okay, it’s just an exam.”

But sometimes… iits NOT okay.

When you see a low mark on your paper, your stomach drops.
You feel this strange mix of guilt, embarrassment, and anger.

And when someone says, “It’s fine,” you might even feel annoyed.

Because to you, it doesn’t feel fine at all.

Low marks can make you feel like you let people down.

Maybe you think about:

  • Your parents

  • Your teachers

  • Yourself

You might sit there thinking:

“I should have done better.”
“I knew this.”
“Why didn’t I study more?”

Sometimes the hardest part isn’t the mark itself.

It’s telling your parents.

You might rehearse the conversation in your head a hundred times.

“Maybe I’ll tell them tomorrow.”
“Maybe they won’t ask.”
“Maybe the topic will just… disappear.”

But it never really disappears.

The Friend Problem

There’s another awkward moment too.

When friends start asking:

“What did you get?”

And suddenly everyone is comparing numbers like it’s a scoreboard.

Sometimes you feel embarrassed.

Sometimes you laugh it off.

Sometimes you just say something like, “It was okay.”

Even if it wasn’t.

And the strange thing is, half the people around you might be feeling the same way, but nobody says it.

My Story (And Maybe Yours Too)

I used to be one of those kids who was good at everything.

Every subject made sense.
Tests felt easy.
People expected good marks from me.

But then something happened.

The difficulty increased.

Concepts got harder.
Subjects became deeper.
And suddenly, the things that once felt simple… didn’t anymore.

That’s when you start feeling something new.

Expectation.

Not just from others.

From yourself.

You start thinking:

“People expect me to do well.”
“I’m supposed to be good at this.”
“What if I’m not anymore?”

That pressure can feel really heavy.

When It Feels Like Too Much

Sometimes it feels like everyone believes in you a lot.

Which sounds like a good thing.

But sometimes it also feels like too much weight to carry.

You might feel like you have to keep proving something.

And when marks drop, it feels like you’re disappointing everyone.

But here’s something important I learned slowly.

Even when it feels like everyone is watching…

You are the one who needs to be there for yourself.

Finding an Anchor

Life gets confusing sometimes.

Especially when you’re growing, learning, and figuring things out.

That’s why everyone needs an anchor.

Something that keeps them steady.

For me, it wasn’t perfect grades.

It was my friends and music.

My friends weren’t the most perfect group in the world.

We argued.

We were dramatic.

We laughed at the wrong moments.

But they made school feel alive.

They gave me a reason to show up every day.

And the drama, the chaos, the jokes in the hallway — those moments reminded me that life is bigger than marks.

Songs helped too.

Sometimes a single song can say what you can’t explain.

It can make you feel understood, even on a bad day.

You’re Not the Only One

If you’ve ever felt:

  • Guilty about marks

  • Scared to tell your parents

  • Embarrassed to share scores with friends

  • Like people expect too much

You are not the only one.

There are millions of students sitting in classrooms feeling the exact same thing.

They just don’t talk about it.

A Small Reminder

Getting low marks doesn’t mean you stopped being smart.

It doesn’t mean you stopped being capable.

Sometimes it just means

The subject got harder

The pressure got heavier

Or you’re still figuring things out

And that’s okay.

Because growing up isn’t about never struggling.

It’s about learning how to stand again after you do.

One Last Thing

If today felt like a bad day because of marks…

Take a breath.

Talk to a friend.

Listen to a song you love.

Laugh at something silly.

Find your anchor.

Because no one deserves to feel like they’re facing everything alone.

And the truth is…

You never really are.
